ANIME SAVED MY LIFE.
To anyone who's enjoyed these animated works (アニメ) from Japan, you will know
there's something about the worlds that appear inside them and the way they tell their stories
that naturally pulls you out of a dark place. They make everyday life seem beautiful, and what they do to the extraordinary is unparalleled.
You can't help wanting to go back for more fantastic ideas, more moments that are so dramatic that they shake your soul.
The more you take in these stories, the less remarkable real life seems in contrast.
Anime saved my life,
But it may not have improved it.
Like a drug, it's driven me away from reality in many ways.
I would rather engage with characters than people, with worlds made of painting and action and music more than my community.
As my most treasured form of self-expression, I would rather stay immersed in anime than face the world.
But anime taught me about what it meant to be human, in many ways.
There has to be a reason dozens, sometimes hundreds of people break themselves to make it,
why millions of fans worldwide have resonated with these stories in a way that seems almost... religious.
We all know that stories can change the world, so it doesn't seem strange to say that anime can do it too.
And so, I'd like to tell all of you a story. About my personal battle and my path of discovery, a question I continue to pose to myself even as I laugh and cry while enjoying anime. Is this addiction, or can it be salvation? Is it stagnation, or is there more to the word 'Animation' than meets the eye?
I present to you, dear reader, The Suzume Project.
A story about stories,
about another world, lying somewhere out of reach.
